CENTRE PHILOSOPHY

Hyde Street Kindergarten offers high quality 3 and 4 year old Kindergarten sessions. We have been operating as a Kindergarten for over 50 years, we celebrated our golden anniversary in 2007, and in that time we have continued to provide an exciting, dynamic, educational and stimulating programme for the children attending.

Our programming is based upon the ‘emergent curriculum’ philosophy which is where learning is play and interest based. Children are empowered as partners with the staff in their learning and as such they help to shape the programme available from day to day. As well as planned learning experiences, the emphasis is also on spontaneous learning experiences and the children’s investigations and exploration.

Play is the work of childhood, and is the way that children learn and understand the world around them while developing and extending skills in areas such as creative and aesthetic, social and emotional, gross and fine motor (physical), cognitive (thinking, reasoning, understanding) and language and literacy. This prepares children for their future life.

We have a strong focus upon environmental education at Hyde Street. In the past the children have been involved in making new garden bed areas which are maintained by the current children attending the centre. Everyone is involved in recycling, water conservation and caring for plants and animals. We have recently received a grant to install two new rain water tanks which will complement this focus.

Each child’s learning is documented through out the year in a portfolio which contains digital documentation, written observations, work samples and learning stories. This form of individual records has been adapted from the Te Whariki curriculum used very successfully in New Zealand as it involves the child, staff, and families in the child’s learning.

The teachers at Hyde Street Kindergarten are highly qualified, experienced and up to date with cutting edge philosophy in Early Childhood Education. Our assistants are very experienced and involved in our programme development. All of our staff are caring, nurturing, professional and fun.

As a community based centre, we are very welcoming to families and as well as our regular sessions, we plan various family days and celebrations through out the year. We also provide social events for families outside of Kindergarten hours and offer excursions and incursions as other ways of being involved with our Kindergarten community.

At Hyde Street Kindergarten we pride ourselves on the fact we are a multi cultural community based centre offering all children in our care the best possible beginning to their education. We are able to say that in the years to come, the children moving forward to primary school and then to secondary school had the best possible foundation to build their knowledge and learning upon.
